Boston Gets Smart Benches

Jul 04, 2014 -- 9:18am

(Metro) Solar-powered park benches are making it possible for people to enjoy the outdoors and recharge their cell phones at the same time.

These smart benches called Soofas are being installed in parks, playgrounds and other locations around Boston this month.

Each Soofa is connected to Verizon's 4G LTE network and can charge two devices at a time for free while also providing location-specific information on air and noise pollution.

The benches were invented by a company called Changing Environments whose founders are researchers at MIT's Media Lab.
