The Daily Progress reports enrollments for the six classes range from less than 10,000 to more than 35,000 students.
University vice president James L. Hilton says the large enrollment is likely due to a general appetite for such courses, particularly those offered by a respected university.
Physics professor Louis A. Bloomfield says teaching a massive online course as a serious U.Va. college course will result in a reduction in enrollment. He says he will try to produce compelling content that will make students think twice before dropping out.
