Dominion Virginia Power is reporting several thousand people are without power in Central Virginia as winds from Sandy continue to hit the region.

Of the more than 3,500 customers without power in Albemarle County, most are clustered in the Crozet area.

Overall, Dominion has 131,000 customers out in Virginia.

 The company with about 2.3 million Virginia customers says backup crews are ready to be deployed as outages are expected to mount on Tuesday from high winds and heavy snow in some areas of the state.

Appalachian Power expects outages to climb in the western part of the state over the next 24 hours. About 4,100 of its 500,000 Virginia customers were without power Monday night.

Virginia's electric cooperatives reported about 2,360 customers without power Monday afternoon.

Additional crews are being brought in to assist with restoration efforts.
