Joe Thomas in the Morning
(Metro) A family spokesperson has confirmed that a former chief justice of the Virginia Supreme Court has died.
Harry Lee Carrico passed away Sunday morning at the age of 96.
A statement from Governor Bob McDonnell says Carrico's 42-year-tenure was the longest term of any judge in the court's history.
The justice was the author of the Virginia Supreme Court's unanimous 1966 opinion upholding Virginia's interracial marriage statutes.
Carrico is survived by his wife Lynn and a daughter, Lucretia, who is a General District Court judge in Petersburg.
